Review Of America’s Most Controversial Acne Treatment

What is Accutane?

The most controversial acne product on any market, Accutane is arguably also the most powerful.  It has been known to eliminate even the most difficult cases of acne, and other products simply pale in comparison.  It even works against types of acne such as Acne conglobata that never respond to conventional treatments.  But it’s controversial, because while powerful, it has been known to cause quite a few side effects, even scarring users for life in some cases.  Why?  Because it works with a form of vitamin A called isotretinoin, eliminating not only oils in the skin, but also liquids and oils throughout the whole body, including the eyes, joints, mouth, and other important areas.

History of Accutane

Vitamin A was first used to fight acne in 1930.  Since then, companies have developed too many varieties of vitamin A to count, including isotretinoin and consequently Accutane.  Accutane was officially introduced by Hoffman-La Roche in 1982.  Since then, they have outsold every other major acne treatment, even though it is recognized as being only for those with severe cases of acne, because when compared to otherwise toxic levels of vitamin A in its original form, Accutane actually causes fewer side effects ironically enough.

Benefits

Accutane completely stops oil production, and it is literally the only treatment that has been shown to work against severe forms of acne outside the major forms of acne such as acne conglobata. It is sometimes also the only acne treatment that works for those suffering from severe acne. However, it does not work for everybody, sometimes actually making acne worse. In fact, our research has revealed that Accutane can cause some severe side effects as well as not being effective against acne in certain cases.

Side Effects

Oil is necessary to the skin to some degree. It is the excess oil that is the problem. But Accutane stops all, causing dryness, discomfort with contacts, joint pain, back pain, dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, dryness of the lips, mouth, nose, and skin, cracking or peeling of skin, itching, rashes, or changes in finger nails. In extreme cases, it has also been known to cause severe birth defects or even fetal death, depressed moods, trouble concentrating, insomnia, agitation, change in behavior, hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, blurred vision, sudden or severe headaches, vomiting, hearing problems, seizures, severe pain in upper stomach, fast heart rate, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay colored stools, jaundice, severe diarrhea, rectal bleeding, black, bloody, or tarry stools, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, purple spots under the skin, easy bruising or bleeding, or bone fracture.

Conclusion

While Accutane is effective for some severe cases of acne, it really only attacks one major cause. It also goes too far to say the least and causes many serious side effects that go beyond the expected dry skin. It should not be used without serious caution and consideration, as some of the side effects can not only be serious, but affect you for the rest of your life. There are various other solutions which are more comprehensive and also come without side effects.

“I used accutane after years of suffering with acne and severe pain from this. Without this medication and six months of chapped lips, I would have still have nodules and cysts and oily skin and my acne would just be worse.”

“Kind of sad with the results I spent with Accutane. I mean with dermotologist visit and with this prescription, I spent so much and I expected much more. Pretty big let down...”

“This product is absolutely amazing. I\\\'m a sixteen year old boy who had large acne spots at one point and I wore make up to cover up majority of my face. I was always never about my face and how it looked and worried about pimples all the time. I started the accutane treatment in September and now I only have two days left. Currently I have not a pimple in sight on my face and am always confident about my face when I go out. Accutane worked really really well for me and I would highly reccomend it. The only cons was really dry lips and a fairly dry face. Its definitely a commitment but it\\\'ll be worth it in the end! Good Luck!”

“I\\\'ve been on it for about 5 months now (i finish in a week!)and i\\\'m definitely happy that i\\\'ve gone on it. I\\\'m not sure if the results will last...but so far my skin looks amazing!rni had a ridiculous amount of acne on my forhead, cheeks and chin, and the pores on my nose were especially large. All of that is gone now, and day by day i can see my old acne scars going away. rnAt first, my acne got a million times worse. I was almost embarassed to go in public. Makeup did not help (at all)and my entire face was covered in huge pimples. But even though i was getting an extreme amount of pimples, i could see the pores on my nose getting smaller. At first, although they got smaller, my nose as well as my chin got kind of fuzzy from the pills (it was almost as though everything from inside my pores was coming out and making an appearance on my face..pretty gross). But then after about a week and a half, that went away too. rnIt took especially long for my pimples to go away, though. Probably about 4 months or so. And i still get a pimple or two before my period. But my skin is looking amazing!rnThe side effects were pretty intense, though. I got extremeeee headaches for about a week every month, the joint pain gets really bad when i work out, and my lips have never been so chapped.Along with that, my skin so so dry that it peels throughout the day, i experienced some rectal bleeding, i get nose bleeds daily, and i\'ve become a more anxious/nervous person. but would still recommend it to anyone...my skin hasn\'t looked this good in 9 years. Last week, for the first time in years, i went to school without coverup on and it was one of the most liberating feelings in the world.”

“Accutane is the best acne drug ever invented for acne. I had wanted to go on it since i was 13 years old. Ofcourse, there is many known side effects and my parents would never sign the paper! So when I finally turned 18, I went on it right away. My acne is gone and im in my last month.(Which is five for me)My side effects are chapped lips, minor rash(that doesnt itch) on my forearms, minor mood swings, and I sunburn easily. I recommend it to anyone.”

“I used accutane in the late 1980s and it was a godsend. Currently I amexperiencing more severe breakouts and am asking my derm to prescribe it again. The only side effect I can remember was the DRY DRY lips. But I used a prescription ointment and it wasn\\\\\\\'t too bad. I also remember back then I had to have a monthly pregancy test with a blood draw not a urine sample. I hope my derm thinks it will be effective for me again as I feel desperate”

“Since I have taken accutane I have been diagnosed with lupus or some sort of immune disorder, irritable bowel, high blood pressure, I have extreme abdominal pain, which doctors are still trying to diagnose what is wrong along with abdominal swelling. My vision is distorted, I have obstructive sleep apnea, depression and I also am waiting for doctors to figure out what is wrong with my female reproductive system. I last took the medicine in 2001 and in early 2003 here came all the problems. I take 7 medications to help with these problems and I am looking at surgery soon.”

“I used accutane when i was 15 as i had severe acne on my back and severe scarring and nothing would help this problem so my parents went and got me on accutane. I took it for about 6-8 months, it is a big commitment. You need to get blood tested each month to ensure your health is stable while on the drug. I had pretty bad dryness on my face and arms to the point of skin peeling, but it was either deal with the dryness or very painful acne for the rest of my life, so i chose the dryness. Just have a your dermatologist prescribe a very good moisturizer. While on it you need to definetly make sure you keep your skin moisturized or it will just get worse. But accutane really helped me, i couldnt believe that my severe acne was gone. I still have regular acne but it is much much more managable than it was. I rarely have any acne on my back and when i do it is just normal acne and no scarring occurs. It was a miracle. I really couldn\\\'t believe it. Im 18 now and still have no problems or left over side-effects. I would recommend this product but still proceed with caution, it is a very powerful drug and can be very helpful or harmful. Stick with the product if all you experience is less severe side-effects such as dryness, live with it and moisturize, trust me you will be very pleased when it is all over. After you have finished the drug the dryness may continue for a 1-3 weeks as it stays in your system for about that long of a period. Good luck to all who are looking for a solution to their severe acne, be strong and stick it out, but remember if you have severe side-effects discontinue use immediately and see a doctor. Hope this helps everyone. Good luck.”

“I have been on accutane for 4 weeks now and it has dramatically cleared up most of my acne. i used to have really bad acne on my forehead and cheeks, and now it has mostly disappeared. the only bad thing about this product is having really dry lips but you should definitely stock up on the chapstick cuz that helps. i would recommend this to anyone who finds acne annoying. cuz i have been using creams and gels just to try and help slow down my acne but none of them worked! and i got frustrated and i was thinking about going on birth control pills but my dermotologist suggested accutane. and I LOVE IT!!”

“Eleven years ago, I had severe cystic acne. I was so depressed, had no self-esteem and could not look in mirrors. The acne was extremely painful and gross.I often hid my face behind my hair. What a nightmare. I tried everything, different prescriptions, natural remedies, homeopathic, you name it. Finally a great doctor in Washington D.C., Edward Stolar, prescribed me Accutane. The first month of taking it my face was 75% clear. By the second month, my face was completely clear. I can\\\'t imagine Accutane causing anyone depression because it cured mine.”

“I used accutane for about 5 months in the late 1980\'s. The side effects seemed minimal compared to the results. I was acne free for about 8 years. What I didn\'t know at the time was that my depression, stomache problems, joint pain (now severe at age 40), and psoriasis, would all be linked to using accutane. I wonder if I knew all the pain I suffer now was worth it. I also wonder if there would have been a better treatment. My acne was severe and my dermatologist did not try any other treatments, so I will never know.”

“Went on accutane 10 weeks ago for back, chest, and shoulder acne (never facial for some reason). After week 3, beyond all of the normal side effects, all over muscle and joint pain set in. I\\\'m in my late 30s, and generally healthy. I took 2-3 percocets per day, as well as anti-inflammatories. It became worse and worse until I began almost having a mental breakdown. I started on 60mg/day and then had to reduce to 40 as I thought I would become a vegetable. I didn\\\'t want to get out of bed and at the same time it hurt to lie in bed. I wanted it to work very badly but should have stopped weeks ago. The funny thing is, it never even really reduced the acne during that time period (though I realize it was short). I stopped 5 days ago and am feeling about 10% better every day. I want it all out of my system for good. It obviously works for some people, just be very careful not to get caught up in the cycle I did. Without the strong social network I have, there could have been very bad mental outcomes for me.”

“After trying every form of acne medicine prescribed by my dermatologists in 1996, he reluctanlty precribed Acutane. The drug dried me up immediately, and caused my irriation. I was constantly puttling lotion on my face and lips. HOWEVER, Acutane cleared my face immediately. I can litter count the number of pimples I have had since 1996 to present on both hands. I am very greatful for accutane. I helped me get my confidence back.”

“This was a miracle cure for me. Yes my skin peeled off and for a month or maybe more, my whole face was peeling off. My eyes and lips were also really really dry. Once that was over I had this beautiful glowing skin. I couldn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t believe I could ever look like that. I had spent years with painful, itching, boil-like lumps all over my face that reacted with various hormones through my cycle and nothing worked on it. This was a last resort and believe me when it was first recommended I walked away and said no way. It was all too scarey, but then I saw what it did for my sister (who has a history of depression). Her skin was amazing. She did suffer from mood swings and ended up not staying on for the full six months, but it was still effective. I think that it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s really sad that some of the people who used this product had bad to tragic side effects, but I would also like people to know a good story about accutane. It\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s probably 7 years since I took it and I am not totally clear and still use products to maintain my relatively clear skin, but it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s a million miles better than was it once was.”

“I used Accutane when I was in high school. I\\\'d had acne since the sixth grade, and it had become cystic by the time I was 14. My body reacted well to Accutane, and the chapped lips were a small price to pay for having my skin clear up for the first time in five years. It\'s been six years since I finished my treatment and so far, I\'ve been fine.”

“I used Accutane last year on the lowest dosage for three months and the results were absolutely amazing. I used to have very oily skin, with moderate acne in my \\\'t-zone\\\' and it completely cleared up within the first two months of use. I suddenly felt more a lot more confident and happier with my appearance.rnAbout two - three months after I stopped the treatment, I noticed my skin becoming oily again, and now a year later I\\\'m back to where I started. My skin is just as oily, if not oilier than before, and my pimples are making a second appearance. I\\\'m using Differin now, but it doesn\\\'t seem to be working at all.rnAlso, Accutane came with quite a few side effects; chest pain, abnormally quick heart rate, irritable bowel syndrome, joint pain (especially in knees, hips, wrists and ankles), random blurred vision and anxiety. rnI\\\'ve considered going back on Accutane on a higher dosage since I\\\'m extremely insecure about my skin but I don\\\'t think all of the side effects are worth it. It is definitely an amazing product though if you are willing to potentially sacrifice your heath and are willing to go on more than one treatment if it doesn\\\'t work the first time. Good luck, hope this helped!”

“I have been taking accutane now for almost 4 months (1 week left to go!!!!) I have gone from, and I am not afraid to say, a puss filled 22 year old, to an almost flawless face. Accutane has worked miracles on my face and the only side affects i have encountered are dry lips, dry face and a decrease of my libido. I have no depression and infact, this medication actually improves my mood as I no longer wish for a new face! I am happy with my appearance, i am more confident and have a better belief about my self. Only downside is the increased fragility of your skin. AVOID HEAVY SCRATCHING!!!! Use gentle, moisturising cleansers. Definitely would recommend!!!”

“Accutane changed my life for the better. I only wish I would have done it sooner. I have had no lingering side effects, just the dryness during treatment. I am 39 and didn\'t get treatment until I was 35, but my face is finally clear, I still remember how painful and embarassiing the breakouts were, those days a gone. My back used to breakout too, gosh that was also painfully embarassing... that too is no longer an issue. I have a teenage daughter that has the same skin as me and we are considering starting treatment for her.”

“I sued accutane for a little over a year, I started on 20 and gradually got to the highest dossage. One thing is it got much worse at the start before I felt any results it was a really hard year. I look at picutres during that time and it was sad, terrible looking. That was 3 years ago...I RARELY rarely breakout and if I do it\\\'s an ocassionaly zit here and there, sometimes on my face but usually on my chest and its gone in 2 days. It was really worth it for me. The acne I had was so severe and painful that I felt nothing was going to work. BUT accutane changed that. Aside from some scarring people tell me all time \\\"you can\\\'t tell anymore\\\" During the year of taking it the side effects I encountered was chapped lips to the point of pealing and bleeding, dry eyes, dry skin to the point it was raw, and that was about it. IT WAS WORTH IT for me! I would do it again with out a doubt knowing the results I\'ve had.”

“I took accutane in the late 80\\\\\\\'s. My only regret was that I didn\\\\\\\'t take it while I was still in high school. My acne definately affected my self esteem. The only side affects I had was dry skin and lips. I used shepherd\'s lotion for the dry skin and it worked wonders. I even still wore my contacts during the treatment phase. I was amazed at the results and still to this day I may get a few pimples now and then but not many. I even had two very healthy children. No complications with my preganancies. I now have a 16 year old with severe acne and he will be going on accutane within the next few weeks. I highly recommend it.”

“I am 17 years old and I am just starting Accutane now. I have taken two pills so far, last nights and this mornings. Nothing has happened yet but that is to be expected considering I just started the program. The side effects do look scary but as I read more of these positive reviews I feel better about it, it just sadly looks like acne still comes back for some people and now I wonder if it will ever go away permanently :/. I\'ll just have to hope this works.”
